Transported Public Art Commission - RSPB Frampton Marshes

Transported, the Creative People and Places programme from Arts Council England for Boston Borough and South Holland, Lincolnshire, are inviting commissions from artists and architects for a new public art work to be based at RSPB Frampton Marsh.
Transported is a community focused arts programme specifically aiming to increase the number of people in Boston Borough and South Holland that are engaging with the arts. After the launch in Holbeach last May, Transported then took lots of arts events out over the two areas to get local opinions about what should form the programme, leading to eleven different projects that will be pursued during 2014. One of these is Public Art, and a brief has just been released detailing the first commission for artists and architects.
Nick Jones, Programme Director of Transported, said: “The problem with art, and particularly art in public spaces, is that everybody has a different idea of what it should be. So we are going to put a real life project, a commission at Frampton Marsh, under the spotlight, and invite everybody to examine it. What’s important is not only that we invest in the creation of special site specific artworks that will be enjoyed for years to come, but also that we get local people involved in the process, inspiring ambitious projects that can take place with Transported but also beyond this initial arts council funding”.
The commission is to create an artwork specific to RSPB Frampton Marsh nature reserve and follows on from the already successful Structures on the Edge programme that has seen some spectacular artworks created along the East coast, such as the Salt Licks on Huttoft Bank and the Cloud Bar at Anderby Creek. This new featuremust enhance the experience for existing and new visitors to the reserve, including bird watchers and local people of South Holland and Boston Borough, fully enabling them to appreciate our special landscape.

We have been looking at ways to engage with our visitors using the arts at Frampton Marsh for a while, so to have a partnership with such an innovative project is fantastic. Transported are holding two Open Days to visit the RSPB site at Frampton Marsh and to meet the Transported and Frampton Marsh team prior to the Expression of Interest Deadline on Friday 4 April. These will take place on Tuesday 25 February and Saturday 15 March 2014 from 10.30am to 4pm.
