Quarry 2

Summary

The Q:2 project took place in Betchworth Quarry, near Dorking in Surrey over three days during June 2006.

This temporary project and performance was initiated and managed by the artist Lee Simmons. The project was financially supported by Surrey County Arts and Arts Council of England, South East.

It involved a large scale intervention on the face of a chalk quarry, with an accompanying “interchange” colouring the fleece of 42 local sheep, and a designated space to view and discuss the event.

The project was located within an SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest) and a Special Area of Conservation Interest. The work attracted strong and diverse reactions, and highlights differing perceptions and attitudes towards working with “natural” landscapes, as well as illustrating the difficulties faced by artists in self-initiated and managed projects.
