Public Art Forum Update

Public Art Forum's most recent event was hosted by Canterbury City Council and aimed to provide a context for an ongoing discussion about decommissioning and marked the launch of a research project being carried out by two of the contributors in partnership with the Arts Council and Canterbury City Council, Ashford Borough Council, Shepway District Council and Land Securities plc.

As increasing focus is given to the quality of our public space, the issue of artworks in decline will become more acute. Often a repository for collective memory and public feeling, artworks are imbued with complex issues. Whilst the improvement of a pedestrianised shopping street or facelift to a park is often seen as progressive, the resiting or destruction of a work of art often incites a more animated response.

The event highlighted the need for the considered and thorough research project that is being proposed. Further consultation throughout the research will be hosted via PAF's website; you can register to keep informed via the site www.publicartforum.org.uk, and access summaries of the presentations and discussion from this event. You will also receive updates of future events.

In addition to events, PAF will be working to develop its research programme, in particular the evaluation of a number of public art projects through the UK.
