Recent Commissions at Dorset County Hospital
Gabriella Sancisi's commission for Dorset County Hospital is one of twenty funded through our lottery award. Photographs of 160 staff reflect her interest in the way that the workplace affects the individual. A new departure were the baby portraits, taken over a period of a week in the Maternity Unit.
Projects in response to needs identified by staff include Shelagh Wakely's silvery trellis for the terrace outside the Intensive Care Unit, designed to disguise an expanse of metal wall visible from the Unit windows. Based on wild brambles and roses it is like a vast drawing in aluminium, each section individually cast from hand cut templates. Real passion flower and clematis twine their way around it.
The Millennium project, the Wall of Words,is a collaboration between writer, Paul Hyland, letter cutter, Andrew Whittle and artist, Kevin Carter. The stories of ten patients, each born in a different decade of the 20th century give us ten phrases, carved in stone, referring to themes such as birth, healing, place etc. These touchstones, will, via an interactive interface, reveal parts of other stories in LED, allowing for links to be made between generations and experience. This project will be finished in July.
