Over Easy
Summary
Over Easy is a rotating sculpture by Richard Wilson set into the façade of the new performing arts centre building, the Arc, in Stockton-on-Tees, designed by architects RHWL. The eight metre diameter disc pierces the building’s architecture and moves almost imperceptibly, dislocating sections of glazing and rendered wall. It is one of three temporary and permanent commissions within the £8.5m capital scheme.
The commission was a complex one and the role of the project manager was crucial in driving it forward, keeping to schedule and maintaining contact and communication between the building and arts project teams. New engineering and technical solutions had to be created by the artist’s team, including structural engineers Price & Myers and mechanical engineers W S Atkins, to realise the piece as conceived, whilst keeping costs as close as possible to the limited budget. Issues of risk assessment and liability were a constant theme throughout the project.
