Irwell Sculpture Trail

Summary

The Irwell Sculpture Trail is a major public art initiative which has commissioned more than 50 works from regional, national and international artists during the five year programme from 1996 to 2002. From 2000 there has been a bursary and training programme for artists wanting to enter the field of public art. The Trail is managed by a partnership of the four local authorities responsible for the Irwell Valley, formalised in a Memorandum of Agreement. A Projects Officer provides overall managementand marketing for the project. A SculptureTrail Map covering all commissioned work has been produced as well as Walk Leaflets for different sections of the Trail.

In the Picture is one of the first of 33 artist in residence commissions to be completed on the Trail. The brief asked the artist, Richard Caink, to work with local groups in the village of Chatterton to increase understanding of the visual arts, and to produce a site specific work with a five year life span. The work comments on the past and recent history of land ownership in the valley and is very popular locally and well known regionally.
