A Survey of Public Art on Higher Education Institution Campuses
Public art on higher education institution (HEI) campuses is a major contribution to the public art stock of the country. It has both a long history and is an integral part of many new campus and building design projects. Some HEIs contain collections of major international significance. However, very little is known about public art on HEI campuses. This project involved a survey of HEIs and arts organisations to ascertain the extent of public art on HEIs and issues such as policies, budgets and practices. The project found widespread enthusiasm for the development of public art in the HEI sector from institutions and other arts organisations. A number of benefits of public art on campus were found, including helping to develop links with communities, and specific educational benefits. The findings of the project will hopefully inform further practice in this field in the future.
