Making Waves

Education and Community Project

A Finale

Friday 19th November 1999

A pageant of music and light by the people of Teignmouth co-ordinated by Wren Trust. A seasonal celebration for the coming of winter, a voyage through the sea lanes of Teignmouth by a carnival of light and music to celebrate the Making Waves Lighting Project. Building on the town's tradition of carnival and festivals, local schools, community groups, arts groups and professional artists will work together to present a magical and memorable event. Processions of lanterns with bands of percussion and brass, will be animating the town centre illustrating aspects of the town's relationship with the sea, peppered with folklore and anecdote. The processions will be of contrasting imagery reflecting 'above' and 'below' the waves. Fish, birds, mermaids, sailors and fishermen challenge for supremacy, before coming together on the Den for a spectacular finale tableau accompanied by specially composed music. The whole event starts as dusk settles, finishing in time to join in the evening concerts of the town's annual Jazz Festival.
