Making Waves

Prepared and Implemented by Diana Dicker 01626 770827

Objectives

To use the completion of the artwork as a means of using Making Waves to:

  • Inform and gain public support for the Making Waves Project within Teignmouth and South West region.
  • Raise profile and develop perception/image of exciting new developments of Teignmouth to attract additional visitors from home and abroad.
  • Generate interest in Teignmouth as a destination for cultural visits.
  • Raise profile and link with other public art projects in the town and district.
  • Advertise and raise the profile of a Community Celebration (which will increase understanding and appreciation of the artwork event and add to the attraction of visitors to the town out of season).
  • Credit the people who have made this happen, Arts Council of England, Teignmouth Town Council and Teignbridge District Council including support from South West Arts, Artist Ray Smith and contractors (Newlink, Gala, Southern Electrical Company).

Background/Work undertaken to date

As the artwork has been visibly installed within the town since Easter some activity has already taken place. This includes:

  • A press release was issued to local/regional media. This was responded to by West Country TV and an interview on BBC Radio and in the immediate local press. More recently following discussion with South West Arts the BBC made an item which was broadcast 14thJune.
  • Now all the adjustment for the artwork has been completed, photos have been commissioned but have not yet been received.
  • Ray Smith had taken some digital images (some examples which are attached in example press release). One of which is being used as an item on the Teignbridge Fun Fest programme (25,000 circulation encouraging people to come to the town to see the lights at night).
  • Discussions have taken place with South West Arts Marketing, and this raised a number of possibilities which are being explored in more detail, including their involvement in post card campaign and organisation of press visits.
  • Teignbridge is employing assistance to promote Teignbridge using Making Waves as a main story. Much of this press and marketing plan will be implemented through this assistance.
